Excellere College is constantly developing its opportunities for sport. Sports Coordinator, Zola McDonald, is working with students, coaches and sport providers to help bring the beauty of sports to students through fun and competitive competitions each term. Sport helps to develop students into well rounded and strong young adults, through participation, team work, grit, determination, sportsmanship and perseverance. Students will also learn how to navigate emotions, such as disappointment, when things don’t go their way, showing their true grace and integrity.

Athletics
Athletics is always a highlight on the Excellere College calendar at the start of Term 1. Students from Year 7-13 including teachers meet at the athletics stadium in town, to compete in various running, jumping and throwing events. Each year new champions are born and a fierce interhouse relay competition finishes the day on a high. Those who perform to a very high standard are selected to represent the school at the Northland interschool athletics, in which our school often attains results to be proud of.
Basketball
We have had a group of Year 9 and Year 10 boys training once a week as a part of our school basketball team. The training consists of team practice and individual coaching. Some students are still relatively new to the game and have learnt the basics, while others are now perfecting their skills and learning strategies for the game.

Cross Country
Cross country is a regular part of the Excellere College calendar. With the senior and middle college competition falling in the middle of Term 2, and the junior competition in the middle of Term 3, the track which includes paddocks, creek crossings and hay bales is always a muddy adventure. Students compete in varying courses depending on their age, with the open Boys and Girls races being 4km long and across a range of muddy, technical terrain.
Netball
Netball has grown over the last few years at Excellere College with teams playing through the Whangarei Netball Centre from Years 1-13. Our school community works collaboratively to ensure each team has well resourced coaches. Excellere College Netball teams are well respected within the netball community for their growing skill set, competitiveness within their respective grades and excellent sportsmanship.

Volleyball
We have had a group of 8-9 Year 9 and Year 10 girls who have been getting up early to practice once a week at 7:30 in the gym for our volleyball team. The girls are training for interschool competitions and have made great progress. The aim is to learn better volleyball skills, grow closer as a group, and give their best effort in competition.
